DioxiCare® Active Ingredients Versus Other Competing Products

1. What is Chlorine Dioxide?

Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) is a gas with strong oxidizing properties. An "oxidizing agent" removes electrons from reactive molecules. By this process, ClO2 quickly neutralizes and eliminates odors. ClO2 acts to breaks the cell wall of halitosis causing bacteria, and its action is very rapid, in fact it is the most rapid acting of anything we have ever tested.

2. What is the "DioxiCare® System"?

The DioxiCare® System uses a proprietary method of generating chlorine dioxide for small-scale application. The gas is captured in a liquid or gel at specific concentrations. The activated product becomes immediately available for use. The DioxiCare® 2-part system enables the user to produce the active ingredient on demand, and at an acidity that is suitable for use on the body. This is in contrast to other chlorine dioxide systems which require lower, more irritating acidity levels, and long reaction times to achieve usable concentrations. The DioxiCare® System actually produces a chlorous acid/chlorine dioxide complex, which increases its efficacy. A unique feature of the DioxiRinse™ medicated oral rinse is the strength of the product can actually be adjusted by the user. No other product we have seen has this capability. The tests we have conducted on the DioxiRinse™ and the DioxiBrite™ toothpaste have shown these products to be the fastest acting products we have ever tested and they also reduce the bacteria and halitosis odors three times more effectively than anything we have used before. Independent clinical studies have been performed on the DioxiCare® products at the following institutions, just to name a few.

  1. University of NY at Farmingdale
  2. School of Dental Medicine Stony Brook, NY
  3. Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas, TX
  4. Westbury Diagnostics Farmingdale, NY
  5. National Institute of Allergy & Infectious Diseases at University of Alabama
  6. Collaborative Microbiology Labs Stony Brook, NY

3. How do the "DioxiCare® products differ from other breath treatment products?

We have found that many products claim to have chlorine dioxide as their active ingredient but they only have negligible amounts of this active ingredient, or they don’t contain any at all. There are also many products claiming to have a compound called “stabilized chlorine dioxide” as their active ingredient, but when analyzed they have very little or no actual chlorine dioxide. They instead contain sodium chlorite which is a mild oxidizing agent and a salt when compared to the Dioxicare® system, and they do not kill the halitosis causing bacteria at all. “Stabilized chlorine dioxide” cannot oxidize and reduce the bad odors as fast or as thoroughly as real chlorine dioxide. Many manufacturers of “stabilized chlorine dioxide” products try to make their products sound as if they have chlorine dioxide as their active ingredient. There are many breath odors that require a stronger oxidant to eliminate them than what sodium chlorite or “stabilized chlorine dioxide” can provide. We have used a number of products since starting our clinic in 1996 that contain the above mentioned active ingredients, and we are constantly testing new and even existing products. What we have found is that the Dioxicare® system, when used in our comprehensive approach, wil reduce halitosis conditions much more effectively and faster than anything we have ever used or tested, and it is longer lasting. The Dioxicare® system also has the ability to break up bioflm in the mouth. Biofilm is a polysaccharide matrix that bacteria produce and reside in that allows them to prosper and multiply. It also extremely difficult for medications to penetrate biofilm. The levels of real chlorine dioxide in the Dioxicare® system has over 4 times the level of the active ingredient, chlorine dioxide, than the nearest competing product that contains the same active ingredient. Because of this the difference in effectiveness is dramatic.

Some products such as TriOral or SmartMouth, which we have used for a number of years actually cause a drying sensation in many patients’ mouths and this can be very unpleasant or even intolerable especially if you already suffer from xerostomia or a dry mouth condition. The levels of real chlorine dioxide in the Dioxicare® system has 3 times the level of the active ingredient, chlorine dioxide, than the nearest competing product that contains the same active ingredient. Because of this the difference in effectiveness is dramatic.

4. What is the difference between "Active" chlorine dioxide and "Stabilized" chlorine dioxide?

Stabilized chlorine dioxide is a misleading term that is unfortunately in widespread use. There are only trace amounts of chlorine dioxide in "stabilized chlorine dioxide" products. The correct description is "stabilized chlorite." The chlorite is stabilized with a buffer and peroxide at a pH of about 7. In order to generate a meaningful level of chlorine dioxide in a stabilized chlorite product, either chlorine or a strong acid must be added. Even though chlorite, or stabilized chlorite, is an oxidizing agent, it is not nearly as powerful as chlorine dioxide. Chlorine dioxide, unlike chlorite, is a gas that must be generated at the time of application by mixing 2 separate parts. With the DioxiCare® System, the term "active" chlorine dioxide is used to distinguish between the two systems.

5. Why two different parts?

The DioxiCare® System is a patented formulation that speeds the formation of ClO2, making the active ingredients immediately available for use, unlike any other ClO2 products. The two components of the  DioxiCare®  System are mixed just prior to use in order to assure freshness of the preparation and to produce the ClO2 gas. When combining the components of the Dioxicare® two bottle system the chlorine dioxide gas is produced within the rinse itself. You can actually feel it effervesce in your mouth and visually see it. A unique feature of the DioxiRinse™ medicated oral rinse is the strength of the product can actually be adjusted by the user. No other product we have seen has this capability.
